"Once I wore a kilt to a climate protest—just for the hell of it—and it changed my life." ~Giles, Co-founder

A kilted Scotsman named Loftus McLeod of Skye stopped me in the street and said, “Aye, that’s what this movement lacks—its own clan tartan!”

First woven by Bronze Age Celts, tartan is the original tribal textile, famed not only for its beauty, but also its power to unify and grow grassroots social movements.

Long ago, McLeod founded the Liberation Kilt Company to fight back against the feudal overlords who stripped everything from him—including his beloved kilt.

Time on your hands? Read about our origins.

Now he’s back with a new mission: to fight 21st-century injustices, from inequality to climate change, autocracy to human trafficking—by reinventing tartan traditions.

Re-founding the Liberation Kilt Company, we designed the Keeling tartan in honour of Dr Charles Keeling—the scientist behind the iconic Keeling Curve—that anyone who identifies with the cause can wear to show solidarity and help grow the movement.

Symbolising the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, the Keeling tartan made its debut at COP26 climate convention in Glasgow, where the World Wildlife Fund delegation wore lambswool Keeling scarves (woven in Scotland, of course!).

We've since designed tartans for a range of progressive causes (view our Tartan Collection) and we're planning a full launch of tartan goods, including kilts and scarves.

In the meantime, choose from three epic t-shirt collections!

Flower Power T-Shirt Collection: Inspired by the thistle–an ancient symbol of resilience–the Flower Power collection scatters seeds of hope for illiberal times.
