COMPANY

What is the Liberation Kilt Company?

Founded by 18th-Century Scottish freedom fighter Loftus McLeod of Skye, Liberation Kilt designs beautiful tartans and other stuff in solidarity with progressive causes. Join the movement!

TARTANS

First worn by nomadic Bronze Age Celts over 3,000 years ago, tartans have endured as emblems of belonging and rebellion—claimed by clans, regiments, crowned heads, and countercultures. No other fabric has flown so many flags of allegiance and insurrection alike.

We’re taking tartan in a bold new direction—as a catalyst for change. Each design champions a cause, from climate justice to nuclear disarmament. Messages are coded into the weave itself, giving rise to a new form of stealth activism that knows no bounds.

Beyond a show of solidarity or personal expression, our tartans function as a ruse in the best sense—a pretext for conversations and debates that lead to great things.

Who wears your tartans?

So far, our work has focused on bespoke tartans projects for influential organisations and individuals. As examples…

Havel tartan: The Havel tartan portrays an endless succession of prison cell windows struck through in red, protesting the persecution of writers of conscience in the knowledge that free expression is essential to any healthy society. It is named in honour of the late Václav Havel, the playwright and president. Last year, twelve Havel tartan scarves—handwoven in Scotland by designer Jonny MacKinnon—were presented to Disturbing the Peace award recipients Arundhati Roy and Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, and human rights champions including Martina Navratilova and Peter Gabriel.

Keeling tartan: Woven in honor of Dr. Charles David Keeling, whose groundbreaking research revealed the threat of rising CO₂ levels, the Keeling Tartan has become a symbol of environmental commitment. At COP26, the entire World Wildlife Fund delegation—including legendary marathoner and WWF ambassador Eliud Kipchoge—wore Keeling Tartan scarves as a powerful statement of solidarity against fossil fuel interests.

Blueheart Tartan: Created as a symbol of solidarity with survivors of human trafficking, the Blueheart tartan has traveled from festival stages to the halls of international diplomacy. Worn by singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas at Glastonbury, 70’s punk rocker Charlotte Cannon, and official guides at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, the Blueheart tartan amplifies the call to end the scourge of modern slavery.

We're planning a launch of tartan products in 2026, featuring kilts, scarves and throws.

T-Shirts

The humble T-shirt has long been a quiet revolutionary—carrying messages that spark movements or, at the very least, help us get through the day! Our contribution to the canon includes three exclusive collections:

Feel the Freedom Collection: Our basic freedoms have never felt more under threat.
But fear not—Liberation Kilt has your back (and your front). Enter the Feel the Freedom tee. The next best thing to wearing a kilt.

Ben Nevis Collection: Whether scaling icy peaks or dancing the Highland Fling, the barmy Ben Nevis proves that anything’s possible in a kilt—calamities included!

Flower Power Collection: Inspired by the thistle–an ancient symbol of resilience– Flower Power scatters seeds of hope in an illiberal world.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, comfort, and durability, our T-shirts are made from weighty 180gsm GOTS® certified organic cotton in a Fair Wear® certified factory by sustainability pioneer Stanley/Stella. They’re digitally printed in Europe using colourfast, biodegradable inks.

SUSTAINABILITY

What are your sustainability credentials?

The gold standard for responsible business is Patagonia, the iconic outdoor brand. Following their lead, we're committed to minimizing harm, making considered choices at every stage, and continuously improving our practices, knowing that sustainability is a moving target.

From GOTS-certified organic cotton T-shirts produced to Fair Wear® standards, to scarves woven in Scotland from Pure New Wool, we prioritise materials that are kind to people and planet. Our packaging supports a circular economy, and every order ships carbon-neutral—at no extra cost to you.

See our Sustainability Scorecard for more details.

Sustainability doesn’t stop with materials. Symbolising progressive causes, our tartans are intentionally designed to catalyse change, and have inspired thousands of university students through the 'Rebel Tartan Project.'

Rebel Tartan Project

Founded in 2015, RTP is a consortium of leading fashion and design programs where art and fashion students creatively engage with global issues, using our tartans as inspiration. RTP offers a platform for emerging designers to explore the powerful intersection of fashion and activism.

Graduates have gone on to work with some of the world’s most respected designers—including Issey Miyake. The project is directed by Juliana Sissons, former designer-in-residence at the V&A Museum, and is supported in part through sales from our online store. A paper on RTP’s methodology was recently presented at an international conference hosted by London College of Fashion.

Do not use fabric softeners.Tumble dry low, or hang-dry for longest life (hang drying prevents wear, pilling, or damage caused by high heat and friction, and reduces energy usage).
