What is the Liberation Kilt Company?
Inspired by legendary Scottish freedom fighter Loftus McLeod of Skye, the Liberation Kilt Company stands against global injustice with products that spark conversation and connection—always with a pinch of humour. At the heart of the company lies a bold collection of tartans promoting progressive causes, complemented by an enticing range of products.
What are your core values?
Facing down the illiberal tide, the Liberation Kilt Company stands for the everyday, stubborn act of choosing agency over submission, dignity over domination, solidarity over silence, pluralism over conformity, and humour over despair!
What are the company’s origins?
Once upon a time –1779 to be exact – there lived a humble crofter named Loftus McLeod of Skye who led a quiet life far from the madding crowd. But his peaceful existence was shattered by an eviction notice from his feudal overlord—one of countless issued during the infamous Highland Clearances to make way for industrial-scale sheep farming. Refusing to “take the King’s shilling” and fight in far-flung wars of empire, he founded the Liberation Kilt Company to stand against injustice at home, rallying hundreds of kindred spirits to his cause. Though captured and exiled, he escaped and went into hiding—only to re-emerge at the dawn of the 21st century. Following a serendipitous meeting at a climate protest in 2009, he and his co-founder revived the Liberation Kilt Company to fight the injustices of our age.

Is Loftus McLeod immortal?
Indeed he is. He discovered his immortality during a sword fight back in the 16th century, when he got run through the chest twice and walked it off. While the other immortals spent centuries trying to behead one another, Loftus chose the low-stakes life of a crofter—growing crops and tending sheep in the Highland glens.
When can we meet him?
Not anytime soon. When Covid ended, he left Scotland on a quest to learn the wisdom of the world’s last indigenous tribes, before it’s too late. Last we heard, he was swapping stories by firelight with a reclusive Mentawai tribe off the coast of Sumatra.
